TortoiseGit is a port of the popular TortoiseSVN product for Git and an excellent introductory piece of software for git allowing Windows users to interface smoothly and simply with the Git Open Source version control system.

Will it give you all of the Git functionality? No.
Will it give you a lot of usable functionality? Yes!

It is far easier to get through the steep Git learning curve using TortoiseGit, there is a clear and helpful TortoiseGit user manual. Lots of people have learned about Subversion (SVN) from the TortoiseSVN guide and I suspect TortoiseGit will help just as well.

There were 20,000 TortoiseGit downloads for version 1.2 but version 1.32 was released 4 days ago and we expect the downloads for this to soar. There is a pretty simple set of instructions on the web site on how to create an XP server which requires the following code,

• msysgit 1.6.4 (Client and Server)
• CopSSH 3.0.3 (Server only)
• TortoiseGit 1.2.1.0 (Client only)

However you can still learn a lot just using the client.
