What's in Subversion 1.5?

The current release of subversion is 1.4.2. Click here for links to the various downloads for this release.

Release 1.5 is expected to be out in the next few months. It is unclear at the moment as to whether this release will include the long awaited merge tracking. Some see the 1.5 release as having “Merge tracking” as its defining feature, whilst others in the development team believe that the feature should be held back for release 1.6.

The Subversion developer community met up on the 16th October in San Francisco to discuss the future of the tool. Their blog can be found at: http://svn-dev.blogspot.com/. A great deal of attention went into outlining the possibilities for Subversion 2.0. This included fundamental changes to the structure behind subversion, including looking at rebuilding the tool using C++.

In the shorter term the roadmap for the development effort on Subversion 1.x can be found here: http://subversion.tigris.org/roadmap.html. This roadmap currently includes the following tasks for mid-term development:

  • Log message templates
  • Repository-defined autoprops
  • Inherited properties
  • Improved rename support
  • Merge tracking
