IBM Rational ClearCase MultiSite Solution

ClearReplica offers improved granular control over 'what' is replicated. MultiSite allows an organisation to replicate a 'whole' VOB's where as ClearReplica can replicate whole VOB's, portions of a VOB or just a single branch of one element. ClearReplica can actually "replicate" portions from several VOB's and consolidate them into a single common VOB in another location.

Use ClearReplica for geographically distributed development teams or for 'hot' fast backup / recover of lost versions. Unlike MultiSite, ClearReplica does not require 'mastership' of objects. This allows development to take place on the same branch in different locations. It also eliminates the need to 'change mastership' when new elements are created.

Technical Details

Multisite replicates all data in the VOB (minus triggers) while ClearReplica "replication" concentrates on the element "versions" and attached metadata.

MetaData types

Metadata types created in MultiSite are replicated to associated replicas even if neither site uses the type. ClearReplica only replicates the type when the type is applied. This yields smaller packets and eases the burden on the corporate bandwidth.

MasterShip of branches

As with everything in MultiSite, branches are mastered. Though in general this is logical and good practice, prevents changes on the same branch, it also impacts on who can create new elements. ClearReplica relaxes this restriction because is does not need to use 'mastership'. Though it is recommended that geographically disjointed development teams do not share a branch, ClearReplica offers the flexibility if required.

Creating & removing elements

In Multisite only the mastering replica can create or remove elements. With ClearReplica, any "replica" can make or remove elements but only from the local replica. Destructive actions are not replicated in ClearReplica. This make ClearReplica a very useful tool for "hot backup / disaster recovery"

Packet delivery & auto recovery

Before ClearReplica sends a packet to a location, it requests confirmation from the location of the last successful packet delivery. ClearReplica will automatically adjust and send all data "since" the last confirmed successful delivery. With Multisite, careful consideration must be given when taking multisited vobs off-line. Packets will hang around in the shipping bay waiting to be played. ClearReplica only sends packets if the remote vob acknowledges prior to generating a packet.
