Introducing Atlassian HipChat Data Center: What you need to know

As Atlassian announces HipChat Data Center, we take a look at the added benefits this will bring to teams, as well as what you need to know if you're using HipChat Server.

Atlassian has today announced the official launch of HipChat Data Center.

Atlassian’s Data Center offerings are specifically designed for enterprise businesses, bringing large and growing teams the scalability, reliability and high availability they need from their mission critical tools. Previously available for beta users, HipChat now joins JIRA Software, JIRA Service Desk, Confluence, and Bitbucket as the latest Data Center deployment offering from Atlassian.

What’s new with HipChat Data Center?

Teams rely on chat to cut down on email as they communicate and collaborate on projects, but it goes beyond that – with HipChat and ChatOps, teams can monitor builds, swarm on IT incidents, increase automation, and much more, thanks to HipChat’s numerous integrations.

HipChat is increasingly mission-critical, which is why it is Atlassian’s latest Data Center release. With HipChat Data Center’s high availability, teams can work without the risk of downtime or interruptions.

As well as all the features your teams already love, HipChat Data Center brings you:

  • Active-active clustering – multiple nodes for uninterrupted communication, even in the event of hardware failure
  • Load balancer – control the data sent to multiple nodes to prevent downtime
  • Increased user capacity – scale up to 20,000 named users and 10,000 concurrent active users
  • Externalized data store – options to keep your existing disaster recovery strategy
  • Deploy using VMware or AWS – extra control over deployment and management
  • SAML 2.0 – data consistency and greater visibility

Moving to HipChat Data Center

When you make the change from HipChat Server to HipChat Data Center, you’ll get all the new benefits of high availability, scale, and improved authentication and control.

If you’re currently running HipChat Server, you won’t need to make the change immediately – though the sooner you do, the sooner you’ll see those benefits! – but you should note that with the release of HipChat Data Center, Atlassian will no longer be offering HipChat Server (HipChat Cloud remains unaffected). HipChat Server will now only receive critical security updates for the next two years, as per Atlassian’s end of life policy. Moving to Data Center will give you full future feature updates and bug fixes.
